The Conditioned Path

http://www.abhayagiri.org/audio/the-conditioned-path

Ajahn Yatiko emphasizes the importance of listening to Dhamma talks and studying suttas because although the goal of Buddhist practice is to reach the unconditioned, the path of practice itself is conditioned. He draws on the Stoics' concept of hedonic adaptation to explain the dissatisfaction intrinsic in any conditioned happiness. The search for conditioned happiness often manifests in the creation and maintenance of views and narratives about the self and world. The Brahmajāla Sutta (DN 1) enumerates 62 such views and asserts that all views arise dependent on sense contact. Returning to the direct experience of the six senses can cut through attachment to views. We often associate stress with engaged action and peace with retreat and non-engagement, but self-view is the actual cause of suffering. Free of this obsessive focus on I, me, and mine, the heart can be at ease in the midst of strenuous action.
Kathina 2012: Delighting in Generosity

http://www.abhayagiri.org/audio/kathina-2012-delighting-in-generosity

Ajahn Amaro, founding co-abbot of Abhayagiri Monastery, returned to Abhayagiri on the occasion of the 2012 Kathina cloth-giving festival; this was his first visit to California since departing for Amaravati in 2010. Speaking shortly after the sangha received the cloth to a large audience of lay supporters, Ajahn Amaro delights upon his return and reflects upon the change and development he has seen in sixteen years of Abhayagiri history. He then tells the story of the eight boons Visākhā asks from the Buddha (Vin. Mv. 8:15; Life of the Buddha p. 151). All eight of Visākhā's requests were actually gifts she wanted to offer the sangha, and Visākhā understood clearly how such generosity aided the sangha and settled her own mind. Ajahn Amaro dispels the notions that the effects of generosity are felt only in future lives and that serious meditators don't have time for merit-making. He concludes by emphasizing the distinction between pain and suffering and noting that, “Adaptability is the key to happiness.” Download File</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>buddha,dhamma,sangha,dharma,ajahn,meditation,chah,meditate,mindfulness,virtue,giving,metta</itunes:keywords>

Monastic Radical Activism

http://www.abhayagiri.org/audio/monastic-radical-activism

Ajahn Chandako describes Buddhist practice as the radical, difficult process of transforming one's life from being based on attraction, aversion, and selfishness to being based on what is wholesome and beneficial. The skills needed for this transformation include generosity, mindfulness and clear comprehension, and sense restraint. If we apply these skills consistently throughout daily life, formal meditation practice will become pleasant and interesting, and concentration and insight will develop with much less effort. Ajahn Chandako concludes by questioning the common assumption that the monastic life avoids taking responsibility for global problems and gives his personal answer to the question that begins the talk: “If you knew for sure that humanity was headed for crisis and extinction, what would your response be?” This talk was given at Abhayagiri Monastery on October 27, 2012.
Download File

Ajahn Pasanno explains how right view–the understanding of experience in terms of causality and the Four Noble Truths–can be applied in meditation. He urges us to investigate the causal nature of our discontent and dissatisfaction in meditation. Why do we sacrifice the peace and stability of the mind to pursue external objects? Ajahn Pasanno suggests that we will never experience the full benefits of meditation until we question and investigate the ever-present sense of me and mine in terms of clinging to body and mind.
Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Yatiko answer questions about practices suitable for beginning and advanced practitioners and pitfalls along the path. They recommend beginning with a fundamental confidence that effort will bring results and warn against a purely intellectual grasp of the teachings. The gradual path requires anchoring experience in the body to temper refined mental self-identification. Extreme experiences in meditation are not the goal; you need the clarity and stability to see such experiences as uncertain and impermanent. The ajahns conclude with a discussion of the Buddhist equivalent of the dark night of the soul, followed by the Sharing of Blessings chant.
Ajahn Viradhammo begins by describing his recent travels to India, Laos, and China. He warns of two pitfalls that can befall Buddhism as it integrates into culture: ritualism, which replaces transformative practice with a “good luck religion,” and intellectualism, which mistakes the accumulation of knowledge for wisdom. The skillful contemplative avoids these extremes by using the intellectual structures given by the Buddha to liberate the heart. To this end, Ajahn Viradhammo expresses the traditional teachings on mindfulness in terms of watchfulness and availability.
Ajahn Pasanno begins this talk with two similes from the Aṇgutara Nikāya: three kinds of mind (like an open sore, lightning, or diamond, AN III.25) and three kinds of medical patients (AN III.22). He then contrasts the noble and ignoble searches for contentment and well-being. Investing tremendous amounts of energy seeking material comfort leads to happiness that vanishes like a flash in the pan. In contrast, the noble search begins with investigating the nature of dis-ease and dissatisfaction and leads to stable, unalloyed well-being that is truly worth the effort.
http://www.abhayagiri.org/audio/the-four-bases-of-psychic-potency

Ajahn Jotipālo further develops the theme of the 2012 Buddhist Bicycle Pilgrimage, expounding the Buddha's teaching of the four iddhipadas, which can be translated as “roads of success” or “bases of power.” These four qualities of desire or interest, energy, application of mind, and discernment are well known in Thai Buddhism but infrequently mentioned in the West. They are necessary to master both worldly and spiritual skills. In the Pāli canon, the iddhipadas usually appear in the context of developing concentration and psychic powers. To develop these themes, Ajahn Jotipālo describes a guided meditation based on the Shorter Discourse on Voidness (MN 121) and reads two passages in which the Buddha describes the variety of psychic powers that can be developed through meditation. This teaching was given on October 6, 2012 at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery.
Download File

Having just completed a two-week solitary retreat, Ajahn Pasanno begins this talk with the familiar teaching of the three kinds of solitude–seclusion of body, seclusion of mind, and seclusion from the defilements. He then expounds the simile of the shopkeeper (AN III.20). Just as a shopkeeper must have keen eyes, be responsible, and have a benefactor to acquire great wealth, progress in the practice requires a keen eye for the Four Noble Truths, arousing energy replace unwholesome states with wholesome ones, and inquiring about the Dhamma from wise benefactors.
The two meanings of "Rest in Peace"–death and peace–are major themes in Buddhist practice. In this talk, Ajahn Chandako stresses how contemplating death straightens out our priorities and developing deep peace allows the mind to rest. He encourages practitioners to investigate, "What is a human body?" and look below the surface in order to dispel deluded perceptions. He describes how his teachers, the Thai forest ajahns, recommend visually taking the body apart piece by piece in meditation, placing each part in front of one, looking back at what remains, and then reversing the process.
Ajahn Karunadhammo finds that contemplating the Buddha's teachings on not-self settles the mind even in the absence of deep samādhi. In this talk, he describes how the Anattalakkhaṇa Sutta analyzes the five aggregates (body, feelings, perceptions, thoughts, and consciousness) as "not I, not mine, not myself" as a strategic teaching to deconstruct the misperception of self rather than as a doctrinal statement. Repeated investigation coupled with tranquility can result in deep insight in which the mind turns away from seeking happiness in the five aggregates.
