Event Description: Upasika Renewal Day is the day that upasikas who have made a formal commitment (see details on the Abhayagiri website for more information about the Upasika program) will renew their precepts and commitment for another year. (Note: anyone is welcome to attend the program, not just those who have made the formal Upasika commitment). Devotion & Ritual: "A Monastic's Life": An exploration of various ceremonies and activities specific to the monastics' way of life and how they apply in lay life. Will include topics such as a monk's confession of offenses and the Patimokkha (the fortnightly recitation of the monks' 227 precepts) and how it informs the monks' daily life; and "Korwat": various duties and protocols of the monastery that inform our practices of mindfulness, service, hospitality, and generosity. The ceremony of Asking for Forgiveness will be discussed in relation to the teachings on Forgiveness and Reconciliation. Ajahn Dtun Visiting

Event Description: Ajahn Dtun was born in 1955 in the province of Ayutthaya, Thailand. He was raised and schooled in Bangkok, completing a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1977. In 1978, he decided to ordain at Wat Nong Pah Pong with Ajahn Chah as his preceptor. Presently, Ajahn Dtun is the Abbot of Wat Boonyawad in the province of Chonburi where he has lived for the past 20 years. He has been a monk for 35 years. Ajahn Dtun will be visiting Abhayagiri for a week and plans to arrive on Saturday evening, May 4th and depart on Friday, May 10th. Although we are filled to capacity for overnight guests at this time, per usual, anyone is welcome to come to Abhayagiri as a day visitor.

Event Description: Abhayagiri's Lunar Observance Day Monastics walk for alms in Ukiah and Redwood Valley starting at 9 a.m. There is no morning meditation or chore period on the Lunar Observance Days. A small group of monks enters Ukiah and walks north on State Street from approximately 9:00-10:30 am accepting offerings of alms food as is the daily custom in Theravada countries. They can be met in front of the Safeway grocery store (on the sidewalk along State St.) around 9:15 am, or in Alex Thomas Plaza in the city center around 9:30 am. Another group of monks walks, starting at 8:30 am, north on East Road from the Redwood Valley town center, and a third group along Tomki Road, through the local Frey Vineyards. Evening chanting, meditation, taking of the precepts and a Dhamma talk will take place at Abhayagiri from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. The evening continues with a meditation vigil through the night, with sitting and walking meditation as one wishes in half-hour segments. There is an intermission with tea and informal discussion at midnight, then sitting and walking resume until morning chanting at 3:00 a.m. Visitors are very welcome to attend as much of the night as they wish.
